    Mod podge!

    HI,
Can anyone help me uncover the mysteries of Mod Podge. I am hoping to get down to altering some clip boards in the near future and seem to have read somewhere that the finished item needs to be covered for protection with Mod Podge or similar substance!
I can't seem to find this elusive brand so can someone please help me with suitable alternatives?
    Many thanks,
    Edna

Mod Podge is a protective sealer for your art work, stops it getting scratched etc. I have heard that you can use PVA glue instead, I have some Aleenes Enhancers which include a Matte Varnish or some Glitzy Sealers which would seal it but with a glitzy shine! you can see them here

yep.. PVA is an unposh version of modpodge.. i have said in many threads before that my (slightly nerdy) dh has asked for the chemical components sheet of mod podge.. and it turns out to be slightly watered pva

i have been using ordinary pva (sometimes watered down/sometimes neat) for years in altered books, and all sorts of other altered items, including backs of glass plates etc.

if you want a waterproof varnish, get a cheap acrylic varnish and paint/spray over after all is dry

You can also use Golden matte medium, unfortunately I haven't got any, but I know where you can get some (PM me if you need).

    Mod Podge thanks

Thank you ladies, your advice has been a great help. I have buckets of PVA glue so I'll give that a tryout.
Clipboards arrived this morning - only ordered them two days ago!! Brilliant.
Now I just have to find the time to splash out and decorate them.
    Cheers,
    Edna

Here's a recipe for making your own Modge Podge Glue. Cheaper than buying, has the same results.

    Modge Podge Glaze

Mix 3 parts white PVA glue (any cheap brand) to 1 part water.
Add more or less water to get the desired texture and thickness.
Add 2 Tbsp. varnish, for shine. Put into container with screw on lid.

I always have trouble with mod podge, it feels tacky even when it is dry. I much prefer the gel medium, it dries quickly too

I like Golden Gel Medium as well. I tend to use the glossy, which you can then sand if you want a matte finish. Great for altered books and layouts because it is less wet.

Yes as long as it's kept sealed. Just give it a good shake before you use it.

This is great news re the PVA because when my relatives moved to France, my BIL left me a huge container of it as it was opened already and the shippers wouldn't take any "opened" goods. Came to me with a bottle of bleach, a bottle of gin and a bottle of tomato ketchup!!!!!! Have found the PVA the most useful of all.

I shouldn't think the tomato ketchup is acid free, Patty!
